The Strangest Client Experiences — and Why Professional Boundaries Matter

At Hagens Massage, I meet the most wonderful, respectful clients — truly, you’re the heart of my work, and I’m so grateful for you. But every now and then, there’s that client who gives me a story I’ll never forget.
Let me share two of my strangest experiences — no names, of course!
Client #1: The “Bonus Request”
This man was actually lovely at first — we chatted about life, family, work. The session was flowing nicely, and everything felt relaxed and professional. Then, five minutes before the session was supposed to end, he casually asked if I offered a “happy ending.”
Deep breath. Calm voice. I kindly but firmly explained that I run a professional practice and that I do not offer anything of that sort. Boundary set, conversation over, session wrapped up. These moments remind me how important it is to stand strong and protect the integrity of this work.
He left me a glowing five star review.
Client #2: The Bargain Sports Massage
He booked a 90-minute Swedish massage but, once on the table, started complaining about every stroke — too light, too soft, wrong technique. What he really wanted was a deep tissue or sports massage. I told him we could adjust the booking and just add a small fee, but no — he insisted I continue, instructing me throughout on how to massage.
At the end, after basically getting a sports massage, he paid me 50 kr short of even the Swedish massage price. When I pointed it out, he shrugged and said, “You should just be grateful.” (Spoiler: I wasn’t.) He is the reason why all new clients has to book and pay online.
He gave me a one star review.
Why Share These Stories?
Because moments like these highlight why professional boundaries matter so much in massage therapy.
Massage is a space of trust, respect, and care. When both the therapist and client honor that space, amazing things happen — bodies heal, stress melts away, and everyone leaves happy. But when boundaries are crossed, it’s not just uncomfortable; it undermines the whole purpose of why we’re here.
Luckily, 99.9% of my clients are respectful, kind, and a joy to work with. I truly appreciate you for showing up with integrity, honoring the craft, and making this practice something I can pour my heart into every day.
Thank you for being part of the good stories!
